Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of the lives of teenagers and children, particularly in developing countries. Though it opens avenues for communication and expression, it also plays a serious role in mental health. This paper conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of published studies from 2015 to 2025, utilizing the databases of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, to assess the impact of social networking sites on the mental health of children’s populations in low- and middle-income countries. The review identifies three concern areas: cyberbullying, increased anxiety and depression rates, and socioeconomic factors’ effects. Literature suggests that adolescents are high victims of cyberbullying at a high rate, which most commonly generates emotional suffering and is rarely reported due to cultural stigma. In addition, children from underprivileged backgrounds are more adversely impacted by social media, including pressure to adhere to unattainable online norms and restricted access to help. The problems are exacerbated by poor mental health literacy and digital literacy. The result of SLR reveals that excessive social media use (>4 hours/day) significantly increases anxiety and depression scores among children in developing countries, peaking at 8 on the impact scale. Thus, the review provides a call for action with realistic alternatives by way of school intervention, parental participation, and community-level intervention. It also recommends future research that is dedicated to addressing the particular cultural and economic requirements of these communities. Future research should also develop interventions to boost emotional resilience and safe internet habits in adolescents, protecting their mental health in an interconnected world.

الملخص

لقد شكّّلت وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي جزءًًا هامًًا من حياة المراهقين والأطفال، وخاصةًً في الدول النامية. فرغم أنها تفتح آفاقًًا للتواصل للدراسات المنشورة بين عامي (SLR) والتعبير، إلا أنها تؤدي دورًًا بالغ الأهمية في الصحة النفسية. تُُجري هذه الورقة مراجعة منهجية للأدبيات لتحديد تأثير مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي على الصحة النفسية Web of Science و Scopus و PubMed 2015 و 2025 باستخدام قواعد بيانات للأطفال في الدول منخفضة ومتوسطة الدخل. تُُحدد المراجعة ثلاثة مجالات مثيرة للقلق: التنمر الإلكتروني، وزيادة معدلات القلق والاكتئاب، وتأثيرات العوامل الاجتماعية والاقتصادية. تُُشير الدراسات إلى أن المراهقين يتعرضون بشكل كبير للتنمر الإلكتروني بمعدلات عالية، وهو ما يُُسبب غالبًًا معاناة نفسية، ونادرًًا ما يُُبلّّغ عنه بسبب الوصمة الثقافية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يتأثر الأطفال من خلفيات محرومة سلبًًا بوسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، بما في ذلك الضغط عليهم للالتزام بمعايير الإنترنت التي يصعب تحقيقها، وصعوبة الوصول إلى المساعدة. وتتفاقم هذه أن الإفراط في استخدام وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي SLR المشاكل بسبب ضعف الوعي بالصحة النفسية والوعي الرقمي. تكشف نتائج دراسة (أكثر من 4 ساعات يوميًًا) يزيد بشكل ملحوظ من درجات القلق والاكتئاب لدى الأطفال في الدول النامية، حيث يبلغ ذروته عند 8 درجات على مقياس التأثير. لذا، تُُوجّّه هذه المراجعة دعوةًً للعمل من خلال بدائل واقعية من خلال التدخل المدرسي، ومشاركة أولياء الأمور، والتدخل على مستوى المجتمع. كما تُُوصي بإجراء بحوث مستقبلية تُُركّّز على تلبية الاحتياجات الثقافية والاقتصادية الخاصة بهذه المجتمعات. كما ينبغي أن تُُطوّّر البحوث المستقبلية تدخلات لتعزيز المرونة العاطفية وعادات الإنترنت الآمنة لدى المراهقين، وحماية صحتهم النفسية في عالم مترابط.
