فهم تجربة مدرسة الغابة: استكشاف مفاهيمي للفوائد والعوائق
Abstract
Forest School, a form of outdoor nature-based education, has increasingly gained international attention, particularly, its educational and developmental benefits are well documented. While existing literature highlights positive outcomes for children, families, and educators, it also identifies a range of challenges that can hinder effective implementation. This paper adopts a conceptual study design and synthesizes findings from three peer-reviewed literature reviews, collectively examining 40 international studies, to develop an integrative concept map of the Forest School experience. Using a thematic synthesis, evidence from the reviewed studies was analyzed to identify overlapping and complementary themes, which were categorized into benefits, implementation challenges, and mitigating factors. These themes were subsequently integrated into a visual concept map illustrating interactions among key elements of Forest School. The synthesis reveals positive impacts on children’s social, physical, cognitive, emotional, and environmental development, with benefits for families and educators’ pedagogical approaches. At the same time, persistent barriers related to risk perceptions, curriculum demands, cost and logistics, site access, and administrative constraints are identified. Mitigating factors, including practitioner training, risk assessment practices, parental involvement, and contextual adaptation, emerge as central to sustainable implementation. By positioning children’s positive outcomes as the core element linking benefits and barriers, this study advances a holistic conceptualization of the Forest School experience and concludes by recommending future empirical research to test and improve the proposed concept map.
